Be Negative!

Negative space, or white space, is an important tool in making designs. Although it can be tricky to combine negative space along with much needed information, it will give you a more professional look if you narrow down and add the least amount of text and/or graphics to the your design. The use of negative space will also add symmetry to your layout and make it look clean, natural, and easier for people to look at.

Negative Space doesn’t have to be white. It can be any color, it just doesn’t have any content within it. Even if your website has great content, a good layout combined with space is even more important. Spacing objects, text and images in an attractive manner allows the viewer to focus on the main subject. Just because there is a space that could be filled doesn’t mean you should place something in it.

A typical webpage will contain a navigation bar/buttons, logo, content area, and the latest news. The upper left part of your design usually contains your logo with the navigation bar under it. The center is saved for content and/or graphics and on the right side, your latest news and events should be entered. Following this simple pattern will give you consistency of spacing and navigation while allowing your viewers to trust you to navigate them to your most important information.
