I had a very interesting lady (from New Orleans) contact me today asking if she should move her old domain name to a new website she had built or if she should use a sub-domain name for her new website. After looking at both sites and knowing she is a busy mom with a successful business, I instantly felt her need to make the jump and attach her old domain name to her new website. The important thing for her to remember is to use 301 redirects for "all pages". Furthermore, register your site at
Google Webmaster Tools. It's an essential tool to have for anyone looking to fix broken links and performing 301 redirects.
Now, let me explain why it is necessary for her to adopt this new website:
"Social Media" + "Linking Power" = ^SEO
Her new site now has a Facebook and Twitter Button. But the golden nugget is the Link to a Blog. She will now be able to create more active links to her website and to Facebook and Twitter and visa versa. So instead of trying to maintain an old website that is very static, she can now use that time to blog and add linking juice to her new website.
Check out the images of the old site vs the new site. You will see the old site doesn't have any social media buttons and it has much smaller images. In the world today, people want to talk and connect. But they need to "see" large and clear images so they can connect with the website. People scan websites. They are looking for images and/or videos. Furthermore, if they love something and if they are making an investment in a product, you can make a sure bet they are going to share it to the world - and that world is the Social Media. The new website isn't up yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing it active. However, I'm really looking forward to seeing the blog activated and filled with
"photos" and past events.
